What is Hospice?
Hospice is holistic care and support for people who have been given a physician prognosis of six months or less to live. The hospice philosophy focuses on comfort as opposed to curative measures for a terminal disease. Often, these curative measures cause more discomfort when they are no longer effective.
Because a person’s last moments are among the most important, Emmanuel Hospice focuses not only on comfort but also quality of life. It is our calling to make every moment meaningful—for you and your family.
Our team of doctors, nurses, social workers, home health aides, spiritual care counselors, dietitians, pharmacists, bereavement specialists, and volunteers work as a team, rallying around your individual needs. This includes services like massage therapy, acupuncture, music therapy, or simply running an errand, being there in prayer, or offering a listening ear.
Find out why Emmanuel Hospice is more than a service, it’s our calling.
Care of Body
Led by a medical director skilled in hospice and palliative care medicine, our team of specialists embraces the hospice philosophy of comfort versus cure.
We work together to maximize comfort for the terminally ill by reducing pain and addressing the body as a whole – physically, psychologically, socially, and spiritually.
The Emmanuel Hospice medical director works closely with you or your loved one’s primary care doctor to manage care. Our nurses make regular visits to the home or any other setting to provide care, support and address symptom management. Home health aides also visit frequently to offer routine care.
Care of Mind
The quality of life is essential at all times – in particular for the terminally ill as they prepare for the final phase of life’s journey. At Emmanuel Hospice, our goal is to enhance the time that remains by caring for each person holistically.
Our focus on physical, psychological, social and spiritual health helps enable those with life-limiting conditions to live life to the fullest extent possible. As part of this approach, our specially trained staff offers the patient, family, friends and colleagues a range of activities to soothe the soul during this transition. These activities include counseling, keeping a journal of the life story, massage therapy, music therapy, or companionship from trained volunteers.
Our team includes licensed medical social workers, counselors, massage therapists, as well as staff trained to provide acupressure and acupuncture. For a complete list of available services, please call 616.719.0919 or fill out our contact form here.
